Conan O’Brien made some new friends in New York City and a new hairdo along the way. On Monday’s Conan, the late night host headed out in Harlem, where he’s filming the next week of his shows at the Apollo Theater.
O’Brien first caught up with two musicians, one of whom beat-boxed as the comedian sang, “My name is Conan / I say yeah-ah ha!” One guy also got to promote his album, but he didn’t let O’Brien have it for free. “Conan, I’ll take my 20 now,” he said as the host walked away with a copy.
After scoring a “Gluten Free” hat, O’Brien’s next stop was at a stand where an artist claimed he can “duplicate” any sound. O’Brien asked him for advice on what to eat, only for a random man to walk up and declare he couldn’t go to Sylvia’s, a famous Southern food restaurant, because “it’s not kosher!”
Shocked to see O’Brien standing there, the man said, “Wait, wait — it’s Halloween. Is that a mask?”
“I’ve been in Harlem five minutes,” O’Brien joked, “and I run into a wise-a– rabbi.”
O’Brien later asked one of the musician’s potential customers if he ever listens to ABBA. Cue a random woman on the sidewalk singing “Dancing Queen.” Viviane’s confidence paid off, as she later wound up singing Stevie Wonder’s “Never Dreamed You’d Leave in Summer” on the Apollo Theater stage.
O’Brien then stopped by a hair salon to try out a new look. One woman suggested braids, and O’Brien was game, failing to realize the process would be painful.
Another customer remarked that his resulting look was “ridiculous,” prompting O’Brien to ask what she’d do if she saw him dancing alone in a club. “Go the other way,” she answered.
